Monasterio del Cusco, Peru

|
The 122 room Hotel Monasterio del Cusco is located in the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco, Peru. High in the Andes, more than 11,500 feet above sea level, Orient-Express Hotels has managed the centrally located Hotel Monasterio since May 1999.
El Monasterio del Cusco, as its name indicates, was a former monastery completely renovated and converted into a 5-star deluxe hotel, which opened in April '96. The hotel is located two blocks from the Plaza de Armas, the city center, and behind the Cusco cathedral.
The monastery was originally built in 1595 on the site of the Inca Amaru Qhala Palace. In 1598 it became the San Antonio Abad Seminary where Catholic priests were trained.

In 1650 the seminary was seriously damaged by an earthquake. During restoration, a chapel was added, beautifully decorated in the indigenous Baroque style. Magnificent paintings, by the best artists of the Cusco Art School, adorn its walls. Still in use today, the chapel is the site of numerous weddings.
As a national historical landmark, the hotel is protected by the National Institute of Culture.
