Sonesta Hotel, Boston
Sonesta Hotels reflect the culture and history of their location and provide a memorable experience unique to each hotel. Somesta hotels are located in Boston, New Orleans, Miami, Bermuda, Peru, Tuscany, and Egypt.
The Chairman of Sonesta, Roger P. Sonnabend, and his art dealer / collector wife, Joan, created the first corporate hotel program dedicated to original art, when they founded the Sonesta Art Collection in the 1960s. Today there are more than 7,000 contemporary works throughout the hotel network, and a design team that makes decisions shaping the unique character of each hotel.
Boston:
The Royal Sonesta Hotel Boston is a 400-room luxury hotel located on the banks of the Charles River offering spectacular views of the Boston skyline. The 600 piece collection includes Insight, a large rusted-steel sculpture by British sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro. It is located next to the front desk within a semicircular alcove designed so guests can view the work from all sides. Other artists that are represented in the collection include Jonathan Borofsky, Jan Dibbets, Robert Mapplethorpe, Sol LeWitt, Claes Oldlenburg, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol, as well as works by local Boston artists, and emerging artists.
Sonesta's innovation has been to provide a self-guided tour brochure. A WHAT (wireless handheld art tour) application was developed jointly by the Hotel and Newbury Networks and is believed to be the first of its kind. Using an iPaq PDA (wireless handheld computer), the location-enabled network software recognizes the viewer's location in the hotel's first two floors of public space and displays on the screen, a small image, the artist name, title of the piece and anecdotal information about over 60 pieces.
